The LG has a smaller display than other launch phones like the 4.3″ HTC HD7 on T-Mobile and the 4″ Samsung Focus on AT&T. We’d wager that LG went for a smaller display to avoid making the phone more bulky since horizontal sliders aren’t petite. Unlike the Focus, the Quantum lacks a super-saturated Super AMOLED display (Samsung makes that tech and rarely has enough to share with other makers). The 800 x 480 pixel display is sharp, though we didn’t find it quite as sharp as the HTC Surround Windows 7 phone on AT&T. Still, it’s not a bad display by any means and we like the slightly warm color cast.
Windows Phone 7 smartphones launched with nearly identical specs, and that means the Quantum runs on a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, has a capacitive multi-touch display, 3G HSDPA, WiFi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth with A2DP, a GPS that works with Bing and AT&T Navigator and a 5 megapixel autofocus camera.
The use of matte plastics and the overall design make the Quantum look more like an LG feature phone than a high end smartphone. Compound that with the competition’s classy looking models and the Quantum just lacks the good looks to compete with the Surround, HD7 and even the glossy Focus. In terms of features and hardware, it holds it’s own though– a comfort for those of you who care less about looks and really want a hardware keyboard.
