BlackBerry Pearl 3G Review
The Pearl series is RIM's smallest version of its versatile handsets. An updated version is BlackBerry Pearl 3G which is compatible to dual band UMTS. There are many new features incorporated like support to 802.11n wireless for speedy WiFi connectivity and Bluetooth 2.1 with stereo audio. It can also be used as tethered modem via a USB connector to your PC.
As can be found in newer models of Blackberry, the Pearl 3G has instead of a trackball, the optical trackpad. So it's easier to scroll over your menus and icons like a laptop computer. The new Pearl sports a 3.5mm headphone socket for your favourite music. It includes in addition a GPS chip and is powered by the 624Mhz processor, running the Blackberry 5.0 OS.
This smartphone has Blackberry Maps pre-installed. Google Maps too can be downloaded and installed. The display is relatively of a high resolution of 360x400 resulting in vibrant colours and sharp text. Although the screen size is smaller, the web browsing experience is good enough. When you open the web pages in the browser the cursor changes into a zoom tool until the readable size is obtained. Then it changes into a normal cursor for clicking and navigating around the page. It has dedicated media keys. The phone also comes with a 3.2 MP camera with zoom, autofocus, flash, built-in GPS and video recording. The Blackberry Pearl 3G has a numeric keypad, not the QWERTY keyboard as found usually in the Blackberry range or touch-screen phones. But a user can use the SureType word prediction typing facility pre-loaded in the smartphone. A little practice will make it easy to use.
The fully charged battery can last over 36 hours on light usage. While using 3G data services and WiFi, thrifty and diligent usage can keep the phone going for a couple of days without charging.
